Wrestlemania Review: A Night With Some Surprises

I am not sure what this says for the building to big events given how Wrestlemania turned out. I can honestly say heading into the show, I literally had no interest in who won any match. Yet the show turned out to be a great wrestling event. It wasn’t what some people are saying the greatest Wrestlemania ever. It was very good though for the most part. What this show did have going for it was the unexpected that has been lacking in wrestling for years. Ronda Rousey made a surprise appearance with The Rock. The rumor mill had made it clear Rock was going to be there. People also knew Ronda would be there as a fan. In fact, WWE even acknowledged her presence at the show. No one expected her to get in the ring and judo throw Triple H and gently attacked Stephanie’s arm. In a world, that it is hard to keep a secret this had been planned months ago and had the approval of Dana White Ronda’s boss in the UFC.

In addition, the WWE did a pretty good job of booking themselves out of what seemed like a tough situation for their main event. Some had thought that Seth Rollins could have cashed in his Money in the Bank at Wrestlemania. However, no one expected the twist of Seth coming out during the match because it had never happened before. They were able to build Roman Reigns and make him look strong. Brock was not pinned to lose his title. While Seth Rollins the best heel currently on the regular roster, walk away the New World Heavyweight Champion.

If you’re into nostalgia, you were able to see a ton of it in the Sting vs. Triple H match. We had DX and N.W.O get involved in a very over-booked match. Sting got his moment for the people that care about that. He didn’t get the win. In the end, did you really expect Vince McMahon to “put over” the franchise wrestler of the company that tried to run him out of business? Better yet against his own Son-In-Law in Triple H. Even more to the point how many more matches will Triple H have compared to Sting. How much would it mean for Triple H to lose matches to guys like Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose Bray Wyatt or other rising talents. If Triple H loses to a guy in his mid-fifties that by the end of that match looked like it. How would this be for his credibility?

The United States and Intercontinental titles have been elevated coming out of this event. The Tag Team Titles and Diva’s Title look fairly week.

Tag Titles were defended on the pre-show and at least Cesaro and Kidd retained. They did have some cool spots but it having two-jobber team’s involved and half of the Uso’s did the match no favors. While the Diva’s title was not defended and the tag-team match with the Bella’s and Paige and A.J did get some time but fell flat. The girls tried hard but it just didn’t come off but at least the girls that can wrestle won with A.J got the champion Nikki Bella tap out.

The Intercontinental Title ladder match was much hyped but for me was a typical ladder match. Some cool spots and a nasty bump for Dean Ambrose that you hope really didn’t get him injured. In the end, the rumored winner Daniel Bryan was in fact the winner. They tried to make this seem a big deal with a cast of hall of famers that held the title was congratulating Daniel backstage. It is still impossible not to see the contrast in the fact Daniel Bryan winning the world title last year and this lesser title this year. I am just glad Bryan made it out of this match injury free.

The WWE went all out to try to make fans cheer John Cena. It was almost like a propaganda film with the entrances for this match. Lana was back and led Russian army men carrying the Russian flag with the Anthem playing. If all that wasn’t enough we had artillery guns firing on the stage and Rusev came in on top of a tank. John Cena was preceded by Republican based U.S propaganda film complete with clips of Ronald Regan, George W. Bush etc and all kinds of typical American images.

Still by the time Cena entered the crowd was singing along to Cena’s theme telling him he sucks. The result of the match was fairly predictable as spoiler alert John Cena wins. I knew this when rumors of this match first surfaced 6 months ago. The match end came with Rusev knocking Lana off the apron as Cena avoided him. Cena became the first man to defeat Rusev. He defended America even though the crowd was pro Russia amazingly, as that sounds. For all the defenders of John Cena I challenge you to defend how he can’t get over in the most patriotic USA USA angle. In any case, he holding the U.S Title does help continue keeping the title strong as Rusev had begun to do. Rusev and Lana seem to be on the rocks but Lana still has a movie to finish so they might not be done. However if they decide to split them it will hurt both in a major way. Rusev needs Lana as much if not more as Savage in his early years needed Elizabeth.

Oh maybe this was me trying to block it out but Big Show won the Andre Battle Royal. They did pull the trigger on the Miz and Mizdow break-up. They were the other two in the final three.  Show backed out and let Miz and Mizdow fight, as Mizdow eliminated the Miz. They did give Mizdow a decent little chance to eliminate Big Show but eventually failed to do it. While the Miz and Mizdow feud was featured the tension between Big Show and Kane was forgotten.  Ryback was in the final four and had several people eliminated at his hands. The opening spot of the match was fun as the entire battle royal turned on Curtis Axel and literally, body surfed him out of the ring as the first eliminated.

Bray Wyatt and Undertaker likely were most disappointing. Reports that Wyatt had hurt his ankle prior to match seemed legitimate. While the Undertaker looked more mobile than he has in the past few years. He grew out his hair as well and overall looked in better health and shape. This all being stated the fact he likely retires next year in Dallas is a good thing for him and for us, as he really should have retired before now. He did get the win over Wyatt and that might have been an audible with Bray's injury or it may not have been. The response for this match seemed muted as it followed the Rock and Rousey show with the Authority. Fans were pro Taker and got what they wanted. Bray may miss a week or two with his bum ankle that he fought through like a champion. Give full marks to Wyatt for working at less than 100 percent.

The crowd hated Roman and they loved Brock, which shocked no one. Brock called the majority if not all of this match until Seth came out. It was a good fight and Brock legitimately getting hurt added to the match. He looked a bloody mess by the end. He still gave a beating to Reigns and to his credit, he took it. I really gained respect for Reigns even if that makes me in the minority so be it. He took his medicine and still worked very hard.

The booking to end things was fairly brilliant to use Rollins and Money in the Bank with a unique never before seen cash in. Earlier in the night, Rollins had a great match with Orton that Randy won. Rollins taking an amazing RKO to close that match which seemed forgotten after his stunning cash in to win the title.

In the end a Wrestlemania that I felt little to no investment, it wound up being a pretty great show. I give credit when things are good and this Wrestlemania was good, was worth my time, and kept my attention throughout.

Brock Lesnar Turns Up Heat On WWE By Showing Up At UFC 184

After walking out on Raw on Monday, on Saturday Brock Lesnar the current WWE Champion walked into the Staples Center to watch Ronda Rousey make history. Rousey would watch him capture the WWE Heavyweight Title in the same building smashing John Cena. It may be a decision the WWE will really regret.

Dana White the UFC president before Dave Meltzer could ask the question as to why Brock was there he asked it for him. In answering his own question, he said that Lesnar was in town and wanted to see the fights. White also said that Brock is under contract to WWE and he said the day after that contract ends he expects to hear from Lesnar.

White has been hinting at conversations he has had with Lesnar but because of the obvious threat of a tampering legal action from WWE will say with a twinkle in his eye that Brock and I are friends and did not talk business. This is about as believable as Nikki Bella joining the UFC and defeating Ronda Rousey in the Octagon.

It has been rumored the dispute on Monday was about a new contract Brock wanted with WWE that would allow him to fight for UFC. Dana White offered no comment, or was asked, if he would be on board for such a scenario as has been rumored. Bellator the competitor to the UFC has had former WWE star and current TNA wrestler Bobby Lashley fight for their organization while under contract with TNA. The WWE is not TNA though and it would be unlikely they ever agree to such an arrangement.

White made a lot of news announcing that C.M Punk signed with the UFC in December and would fight at some point in 2015 in the UFC.

The idea the WWE keeps trying to push that they are not in direct competition with the UFC is becoming even more of a joke by the day. Lesnar is next scheduled to appear for the WWE on March 9th and if he doesn’t you have to wonder if he would pull a C.M Punk like move and walkout if he does get what he wants with a new deal allowing him to work for both UFC and WWE. This would throw the Wrestlemania main event that had been already in trouble due to fans rejection of Roman Reigns into a tailspin.

The more likely is Lesnar plays out his contract and signs with the UFC practically moments after he is pinned to the mat by Roman Reigns. Dana White seems very confident that he will have Brock back as soon as that match is over. Rumors of a Ronda Rousey appearance at Wrestlemania have been out there as well. She will not be fighting anytime soon as she is booked to do another movie. So maybe, Dana should just tag along and he can sign Brock, as he makes his exit from the ring while the fireworks are going off for Roman Reigns.

In any case the WWE has be pretty pissed to see their Champion on the UFC PPV and not even recognized as being a part of the WWE. In fact, just as a former UFC legend. WWE often feared C.M Punk would be made to look foolish in his appearances as a fan when he worked for the company. They rejected him permission to walk out for a fight with his friend Chael Sonnen in Chicago.

Add in the fact that the WWE has been taking heat for not using their women correctly and we had a UFC show draw a larger gate than Summerslam in the same venue with a show headlined by two women’s matches. It all adds up to a big in your face to Vince McMahon and the WWE.

Brock is as good as gone at this point.

4 Horsewomen In Attendance At Latest PWG Event

So the 4 horsewomen showed up for the latest PWG Show that was untitled but has now been dubbed the Good Bad and Roddy. Had they know maybe it would have been Rowdy as Ronda Rousey ended up being in the house.

Also seen in the crowd was Brad Maddox who apparently has been at several PWG shows of late. He recently appeared out of no where on the WWE app. As for the results from this show here they are:

Tommaso Ciampa def Biff Busick via project ciampa from the second rope.

Cedric Alexander def Bobby Fish via Side suplex backbreaker/lumbar check

Brian Cage def Uhaa Nation via discuss lariat

PWG Tag Titles

Candice and Joey def Chuck Taylor and Johnny Gargano to retain via Candice reverse rana on Chuck Taylor.

Trevor Lee def Adam Cole via small package.

Young Bucks over ACH and AR Fox via package piledriver/super kick combo

 PWG Title

Kyle O'Reilly def Roderick Strong via triangle choke!

The tradition of you never know who might show up at PWG event continues. Kevin Steen mentioned William Regal seeing him on PWG show as a big reason why he finds himself today in WWE developmental. Many famous people have made their way to check out perhaps the hottest independent show in the world over the years My big question is did Adam Cole get to meet Ronda finally...Will make sure to ask him next time he is on with us.

Stephanie McMahon Gets Iced by Ronda Rousey and Horsewomen

This is pretty epic and you got to hand it to Stephanie McMahon she took the Ice Bucket Challenge and was iced by Ronda Rousey and the 4 horsewomen. In her wrestling outfit from last night no less. Roll the video footage:

Ronda Rousey and he 4 horsewomen were all over the place last night and Summerslam and Rousey if you didn't catch it was flashed the 4 horsewomen/men sign from Steph and was wearing Bray Wyatt's hat when appearing on Camera. Jon Jones who recently had his fight scrapped with Daniel Cormier was also there and sent out a video via Instagram with the New WWE and Former UFC Champion Brock Lesnar.

Wonder what Dana White is thinking about all of this. Rousey even did an interview with WWE.com as well.To quote the great philosopher George Costanza WORLD'S ARE COLLIDING!!! Let the speculation begin on if Rousey appears at Wrestlemania (as mentioned by Stephanie above that will take place in the Bay area in Northern California at Levi's Stadium in Apri)l.

Paige Being Bad Is Good For Her Future Success

If you are a fan of WWE’s Paige you may still be pretty upset by the events of last week. It may not look great right now, but I maintain what happened last week might be the best thing for the young native of England. I think it is fair to say the WWE had done Paige no favors in terms of her booking since being added to the main roster. That may seem odd when you consider she was given the “Diva’s Championship” on her first night on the roster. She was not booked strongly with that title and as a result her getting over as “babyface” character. She was failing to a large extent. Suddenly we are sent back to square one when A.J Lee returns to the WWE for her first appearance since that night.

It was never clearer when A.J returned how Paige was out of her league to some extent. She is not a good talker and that was made painfully clear last week. Where she is strong is in-ring with her work she is even at her young age one of the better females in the company. Booking her as a “babyface” did not show off those skills as well in her matches. Paige was booked as a young rookie that would fight from behind and often times seemed more lucky than good at the end of a match.

Even in the relatively short match she had with A.J in losing the Diva’s title you saw a vast difference. She was aggressive and vicious in her attack. When is the last time you ever saw a female deliver a head-butt in a match. I can’t ever recall it personally in the WWE. Wrestling in a “heel” role this should highlight her aggressive style and get over her original gimmick she was billed as in NXT as being the "anti-diva" to some extent.

She still has the issue of being very under developed on the microphone and I have heard several people suggest a couple of solutions to this issue. One that was mentioned was making Paige the first ever Paul Heyman Girl and allow Heyman to do her talking for her. This would be a huge plus for Paige to have a manager something that is rare for female competitors but would work. It makes her have something different from everyone else and that alone makes her stand out. I could easily see Heyman making Paige come off like a Ronda Rousey type killer eventually. He is well aware of MMA and the impact that Rousey has had on that world. She is without question the “Baddest Female on the Planet” and wrestling is in need of a no nonsense female that appeals to fans that support someone like a Rousey.

Another option and more natural connection would be William Regal. The fellow native of England would offer some different aspects from Heyman but is fully capable of getting over the vicious nature that Paige will be bringing to matches. He could offer his guidance to Paige, which is logical and you could even use Regal having ties to her family as a reason why he has chosen to help her realize her potential.

In any case, Paige really was in bad need of a reset to her character and should get it now with this turn to the heel side of the equation. Working with A.J should be a good learning experience for her as well as it is fairly clear that no female in this company has been as “over” as she has been with fans in the recent history of the WWE.

Paige is only 21 years old and will be given lots of opportunity to grow and live up to her potential which is still very high. This might seem like a roadblock to her early career, but it might be the best thing for her and a tremendous opportunity to grow from it. She seems far better suited to be a “heel” than a “face” for my money.  Eventually a no nonsense butt kicking character can become a "babyface" and it has been proven by Rousey in the UFC and was proven by Austin in the WWE. These are big names to live up too, but merely extreme examples of what I am talking about.

Paige will be fine and should embrace this new role and thrive with it.

WWE News: Cutting Costs Tough Enough and Legend's House 2 In Doubt.

Seems the WWE is in full cost cutting mode according to reports from Wrestling Observer.com According to Dave Meltzer the WWE is looking to trim 20 million in expenses and this comes directly from Vince. WWE had promised a return of Tough Enough and it was scheduled to starting shooting this week and has not. It has now been pushed back to October and the future of the project is in some doubt.

There is additional talk that the WWE may scrape plans for a Legend’s House 2. The original plan was to have the second season go into production immediately after the filming of Tough Enough. Now with that pushed back this could mean no second season for Legend’s House.

This comes soon after news of cost cutting measures to the Raw Pre-show and Post-Show that are now not taped on site and done from Connecticut at the WWE Studios.

Meanwhile the WWE will be rolling into Toronto for house show this afternoon locally. WWE was in London,Ontario last night and show featured Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt in a street fight as the main event of the show. Bret Hart is scheduled to appear on both Raw and Smackdown show’s in Montreal and Ottawa. No idea if these will be part of the event of after camera’s go off.

Ronda Rousey said she is not opposed to working with the WWE in some way if approached. She also said that she as fan would like to see CM Punk come back, but understands what it is like to not have motivation to do something anymore and compared it to her lack of interest in competitive Judo. This was in an interview with MMA Fighting.com.

Rousey won her title defense last night in 16 seconds over Alexis Davis. C.M Punk was watching and proclaimed Rousey to be the Best in the World via twitter. She will be having a knee scoped and has stitches in her right hand. Anyone speculating about Summerslam she could in theory be health at that time but seeing as she is not going to do a UFC fight on short notice in start of August, I would personally rule her out for Summerslam. Any appearance would also need to be approved by the UFC who recently rejected Tom Lawlor being on the ROH PPV "Best in the World". Ronda is however the biggest star in the sport and if she wanted to appear on WWE no idea if the UFC would stand in her way.

Ronda Rousey In WWE Might Be Closer To Reality Thanks Indirectly To ROH?

Has UFC Fighter Tom Lawlor opened the door to Ronda Rousey and the 4 horsewomen riding into WWE? Lawlor was in the corner of Ring Of Honor Tag-Team Red Dragon who regained their ROH Titles defeating the defending champions Nick and Matt Jackson the Young Bucks.

Lawlor was said to be already attending the event as fan. He like Rousey and the horsewomen loves his wrestling. You can argue he is an even bigger fan of it but I don’t wish to get arm-barred by anyone. Already having bought a ticket Lawlor was asked if he wanted to be part of the show and corner Red Dragon. He agreed after getting the blessing and approval from the UFC.

I’ll be honest with you I have no idea if Dana White knows what Ring of Honor is or was at the time the UFC was approached. The point is now the door swings wide open for Ronda to make an appearance on a larger scale in the WWE perhaps. Safe to say that Ronda or her management can now point to this appearance by Lawlor as justification for being allowed to do it. The event was on I-PPV as well so if Dana or the UFC was going to use that as an excuse still some room to say they already let it happen.

All due respect to Tom Lawlor but in terms of mass appeal Ronda Rousey is on a different planet in terms of fame. WWE took a butt kicking on Wall Street last week. Ronda is set to make her next title defence at UFC 175 against Alexis Davis July 5th, 2014 . Summerslam is scheduled to take place in Ronda’s backyard in L.A on August 17th,2014.

So it fits as far as Ronda’s fight schedule goes. Not sure how it works with the other 3 ladies that make up her horsewomen but you have to wonder if this marriage could take place. Rousey now as some leverage to say she is entitled to work with WWE as long as it would be in some capacity where she would not be competing in the ring. A show that likely would see the first appearance from Brock Lesnar since breaking the Undertaker’s streak at Wrestlemania as well. Just another reason a Rousey appearance might make some sense to draw over the UFC crowd in bigger numbers to see Summerslam.

It seems all to good to be true but a basis for how it can happen may have been established this weekend. There has been a lot of faction based storylines in the WWE of late perhaps the biggest real life faction coming in for an appearance might make some sense for all parties involved.

Let the speculation begin. If not for Summerslam, Wrestlemania 31 will also be in California up the coast in the Bay Area.

IWCP Episode 8

Back a little late, but for a little longer as we talk about the news of the week in wrestling. Myself and Chris Walder talk about Mick Foley's comments about WWE, The next NXT Special Event and a lot more. Also we have Steve Muehlhausen from Between the Ropes website to talk about the crossover between MMA and WWE and if we ever get a four horsewomen invasion

Thanks to Steve and make sure to check out his great work along with Brian Fritz over at Between The Ropes. Also make sure to give a like on Facebook. The 10 Count will be back in effect on Sunday and will more people read that than watch the TNA PPV something to wonder about.

Ronda Rousey In WWE Just A Matter Of When Not If?

The WWE always loves main stream attention and they have a history of not being afraid at bringing outside people to pop a rating. It seems that every scrum of late for the UFC’s Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey includes some WWE talk. She was in attendance at UFC 171 and in the 11 minutes or so she took some of that time to talk about loving the WWE and not being opposed to be involved in it although with her schedule it likely doesn’t make sense. She also talked with school girl like enthusiasm about meeting CM Punk after her most recent victory at UFC 170. Have a listen to the media scrum from MMA Fighting Website:

While we joked on the IWC podcast about bringing her in for Wrestlemania this year that likely makes no sense given Rousey’s schedule. Summerslam would seem to make a ton of sense being in L.A but that also appears to be around the same time Rousey expects to jump back in the octagon. So if she is preparing for a fight that likely is not going to work. Wrestlemania 31 up in San Francisco might make a ton of sense.

I seriously wonder if people in WWE have her on the radar because if they don’t they damn well should. You bring back Batista, in part, based on a movie roll, a guest slot for the most famous women’s fighter ever and a movie star in her own right, this needs to happen for WWE.

More than that Rousey unlike some guests that get thrown into the WWE world is a legit fan and a legit threat physically. She may not come alone either as she has a group of female fighters that make up her group they have named the 4 horsewomen. This is just something waiting to be exploited by Vince McMahon.

WWE may already have a storyline waiting for this to all come together. Ric Flair’s daughter Charlotte currently in WWE Developmental at NXT has recently taken on her dad’s history in storyline. They have even gone to the point of calling her the “Dirtiest Diva in the Game” as a play off her dad’s famous catch phrases.  A storyline involving Rousey’s 4 horsewomen rolling into WWE even for a short one off appearance could fit in with all of this perfectly.

Am I obsessed with the idea of Ronda Rousey and WWE coming together? Yup I am, but as crazy as I am about it this does make sense if you can make it happen. WWE got a big boost back in the day from Mike Tyson, there is no reason to think they couldn’t do it again with Ronda Rousey.

I think the idea of her getting into a match of any kind is never going to happen but to see her involved in a way like Tyson was is something I could totally see happening.

It doesn’t seem like Ronda’s love for Pro Wrestling is going away despite true MMA only fans perhaps rolling their eyes. In the same way they do when CM Punk talks about wanting to fight in MMA or at least teasing the idea of it.

Rousey recently met Punk at her fight which was a rare public appearance for Punk since leaving the WWE after the Royal Rumble. If Punk was part of the WWE when and if Rousey were to come around he would only be helpful in making this happen you have to figure.

Not sure what strictly WWE fans would think of Rousey but as she has proven in MMA she is cool with playing the heel if it works out that way. I have a feeling the WWE fans that are also MMA fans would embrace this has something pretty big.

But the biggest reason the WWE would do such a thing is Ronda Rousey brings with her a ton of media interest and her own built in fan base and haters as well. Whatever Ronda Rousey does these days seems to draw a ton of attention. You can make the argument she is the most famous female athlete on the planet today.
